BIO
John Howard, the quintessential San Francisco DJ's DJ. John started deejaying in the year of '93, San Francisco's infamous Summer of Love, out of the genuine need to express himself and his love of music (and do something interesting and creative, other than ride skateboards endlessly around the city).
Thankfully for all of us who have been blessed with his deep and funky, tribal masterpieces, it all began at his friend Jay Valencia's studio in Marin County (North of San Francisco) with an old biamp mixer and some Nervous records. Thirty minutes later, John could mix relatively well (or so he thought as large amounts of the kind were also prevalent). Legend has it that he actually saw a light shine down on him and at that moment, knew, he had found his calling.
A few months later, John began to DJ at Groove Kitchen and Boogie Buffet (where he and Mark Farina had there first residencies together). Then on to Stompy, Together (with Dubtribe), Spundae, Wicked and most of the mid-nineties SF clubs and parties. Currently John Howard is a resident at Kit Kat Club in SF with Jellybear, Garth and Gene Farris. He's played in every corner of the city and travels all over the US, Canada, UK, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Russia and greater Europe.
His style is, how should I put it? Something like this. Solid and smooth San Francisco mixing. Funk (a la Jeno and Thomas) fused with a large dose of Chicago style reckless mixing and track selection (a la Derrick Carter and Mark Farina) combined with his own brand of eclectic jazz funk and Bay Area radio influences from the late seventies and early Eighties. Sound perfect? It is. AND it's always funky and it's always different.
For the second installment (Volume 1 DJ Mark Farina) of the already critically acclaimed SF Sessions Series from OM Records, John Howard provides us with a set of absolutely kick ass house music. As always, it's on the loose and groovy SF tip with a very live feel: lots of jazzy percussion, a few solid vocals and tons of pure San Francisco FUNK. The track listing includes the likes of Martin Solvieg with "Heart of Africa", Bjorn Torske with "Sexy Disco", Bob Sinclair with "Favelas", Underworld "Cups", Gabe Rene "Don't You Cry" and Groove Collective "Everything is Changing" among many others. Not to be missed.
It's best to catch John Howard at one his residencies or a guest DJ spot, but if not, you'll probably find him at home in the studio with his dog Flip. He has been writing lots of music lately (Check out the Spacewalk track on OM Lounge 3) with upcoming releases including a remix for his roommate Ben Cook's Triangle Orchestra release on Imperial Dub, an electro track on Exact Science's SF Bass Compilation, a single on Portland's I Mix, and a new single for Om Records this Summer.
